Twenty minutes later Nat throttled back on the engines.

“What’s up?” Carter said.

“Got a weather warning,” Nat said.

Avery looked around at nothing but clear skies and bright sunshine.

“What kind of weather?” Carter said.

“Might be some large waves incoming.”

Avery looked at the water. It was choppy but nothing that appeared ominous to her.

“We’ll keep going for now,” Nat continued. “But we gotta be careful.”

“Okay,” Carter said. “I’ll lash down our equipment and keep an eye peeled just in case.”

Nat nodded and throttled the boat up again.

“Tell me this doesn’t mean we’re not going to be able to dive today,” Avery said. “I don’t think I can wait any more.”

Carter grinned. “Look at you. You’ve got it bad, don’t you?”

“I just want to know what’s down there.”

“We’ll have to see what happens. Nat has been at this a long time, Avery. A lot longer than me. If he says we can dive, then we will. It’s entirely his call.”

Avery tried hard not to pout as they secured the dive equipment. She glanced up at Harrison. He looked calm, but she noticed that he was holding tightly to the Bimini frame. He might just need those motion pills, she thought.

Avery watched as Carter worked on the sonar device he had shown her earlier. He was busy attaching it to a long aluminum pole.

“We must be getting close,” Avery said after a while.

Before Carter could answer, his dive watch began beeping. “We’re here.”

Avery signaled for Nat to stop the boat. He powered down the engines then shut them off entirely. The silence was a pleasant change from the noisy engines. The only sounds were Carter working and the occasional slap of a wave against the hull.

Avery could feel the excitement building, it was almost too much. She began to understand why people became addicted to adrenaline.

“So, this is your dive area, huh?” Nat said as he and Harrison descended the ladder to the deck.

“This is it,” Avery said.

“I’ve never brought anyone to dive here before. Maybe you’ll be in luck.”

“Don’t we need to drop anchor or something?” Harrison said.

“Don’t need one,” Nat said. “This baby’s equipped with an electronic anchor.”

“How’s that?” Harrison said.

“It uses electric jets to keep us from drifting. Like what the cruise ships use to parallel park those monsters.”

“This is quite the boat you own,” Avery said.

Nat laughed. “I wish it were mine. Military pension doesn’t go that far, I’m afraid. Nope, I just work for the owner.”

While they continued to make small talk, Carter powered up the small digital screen connected to the sonar then began lowering the device over the side and into the water.

“Nat, could I get you to make a few short, slow passes back and forth over this spot?” Carter said.

“Sure thing,” Nat said as he started back up the ladder. “Come on, Harry. I’ll let you take a turn at the wheel.”

“Harry?” Avery said. No one called him that but Avery—and her mom.

“What?” Harrison said. “Nat’s a pretty cool guy.”

Avery monitored the screen while Carter maneuvered the probe to the bow of the boat.
